a general update of general things, i.e. bella feels guilty about internet fail

I AM A BAD, BAD POSTER.

For obvious reasons, being a freshman in college ranks slightly higher than, say, checking up on merlin_tv to see what screencaps have been posted (I am horrifically far behind on Merlin. It's ridiculous. The last bit I saw was "The Once and Future Queen," and we all know how that one ended), but still!

A vague outline of How Things Are Going:

1) NaNoWriMo! Due to treesahquiche's meddling and whining and moaning and generally being adorable, I started Nov 1 at midnight (what a wonderful way to spend a birthday--the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra from 6-10:30 PM with a dessert reception, some O fries with friends dressed in our snazzy symphony clothes, and then 2,000 words out by 2:00 AM) and have been chugging away since. Recently I've fallen behind, due to College Dramatics of the Flailing Sort, but only by about 4,000 words, and I know I am capable of catching up, as my lag of 10,000 words last year taught me.

As for the plot--I seem to have settled on a Steampunk history-mystery; the main characters are a Librarian and a teacher for the Guild of Modifiers who went to primary school together, and now spend their free time writing letters to each other. The format is helpful in certain ways, and fucking annoying in others. It being Steampunk (and, as I Changed History and completely erased the burning of the Library of Alexandria, somewhat Greek as well), letters don't take weeks to deliver from New York and Chicago, but still. I'm just about to shuttle the Librarian off to Vienna with an Italian inventor and a Polish historian in search of her (the inventor's) wayward brother. I have a feeling zepplins cannot deliver letters fast enough to allow rapid plot development. Bollocks.

2) I have recently become a proud pet owner. Again. Her name is Gertrude, and she is a goldfish cheerily purchased for the egregious sum of $5 from Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority. The money is apparently going towards charity. I am dubious as to these claims, but the girls who handed Gertrude in her little glass bowl over to me seemed ridiculously cheery for 8:30 in the morning; they were the charity types. I am attempting to not kill her, mostly by indicating to my parents that fish supplies would make wonderful birthday gifts, and looking for some place where I can purchase a turkey baster. This sounds like a simple plan, but frankly, the entire city of Pittsburgh seems to be devoid of turkey basters. I am unamused! Thanksgiving is in a little over two weeks, for goodness' sake!

3) I am horridly, horridly behind on things like how people are and if their lives have completely imploded and if fandom has magically decided to stop wanking terribly. So! Enlighten me! If you're on my f'list and reading this, drop me a line or two about either yourself or a common interest. Or, alternatively, feel free to bitch about something in the Great Outdoors (of Fandom) that is annoying you. I am very much in a bitching mood. There will be sympathy cake, and probably irked emoticons.
1) Life = fail right now. a) College friends have turned out to be not only super cute but tend to date one another. FML. Again, cute, but somewhat unempowering. One can only play single anthems for so long before one longs to bash one's head against a steel pillar. And, you know, Pittsburgh, we can has steel. b) Paper due Thursday on divine intervention vs natural processes in The Iliad. Fun? Yes. But, you know. Paper. Which, generally speaking, I have to write. Fuck. Also, I'm not entirely sure I can only write 2 pages on the subject and manage to get my thoughts across properly. c) Feel like someone is stabbing me in the side with a fondue fork. It could be that I haven't had much exposure to junk food since I got here, and this weekend I've had pizza and Chinese take-out and not much else. Or, alternatively, it could be something unpleasant. As I have already been to the hospital, another visit would be unfortunate.

2) Meanwhile, in the life =/= fail corner. a) Giants are 5-0 (BOO-YAH) and Panthers are 4-1. b) Neil Gaiman is apparently writing an audiobook on Twitter with the help of his adoring public. For obvious reason, I worship the ground that Neil Gaiman and his shock of rapidly greying hair tread upon, but this seems to be a bit odd. I mean, yes, cool idea, and to a certain degree it might turn out to be awesome. Has anyone ever heard his voice? Oh my god, yes. But on the other hand, mashing together a thousand 140-character posts does not seem conducive to a quality audiobook. c) Read The Handmaid's Tale and Wide Sargasso Sea and reread Jane Eyre. I seem to have a lot of free time to read now, which is nice. Jane Eyre was just as lovely and horrible and yet fitting as it was when I was younger, except now that I don't see it as a book intending to document a healthy relationship, I can appreciate it much more. Wide Sargasso Sea was terrible. Further evidence for anahita_devine and my theory concerning why sequels to great pieces of literature should just stay fanfic. It's supposed to be Jane Rhys' masterpiece, which I find horrifying because it is horridly paced, juvenile, and lacking in actual plot. Her attempts to create a mentally ill character fell way short. On the other hand! I love Margaret Atwood. So much so that treesahquiche and I are thinking about starting a Margaret Atwood book club. The Handmaid's Tale was stunning--beautiful, scary, and god can that woman string a sentence together. I almost think Offred is more insane that Antoinette in WSS, and yet it is presented so subtly in THT that I just sort of accepted her mental meanderings. Must now find copies of Alias Grace (for book club) and Penelopiad (for self).

3) I wasn't going to do NaNo this year, but (cue juvenile blame-game) treesahquiche talked me into doing it with her, and now I have no idea what I'm going to do. No plot, no characters, no ideas. I have a feeling that going into this blind would be a bad idea. MAYDAY, GUYS. MAYDAY.

4) Meme responses! Did not answer for Doctor Who and Press Gang due to lack of characters and lack of intricate knowledge, respectively. Otherwise, had tons of fun. Is it a bad sign that I have trouble coming up with hated ships? I really do think that I can see the positive side of most ships, if given a well-supported argument. Or if I just find the potential too awesome to resist. At any rate!

Fandom: Gilmore Girls, for tearductcircuit

One True Pairing Ship: Rory/Jess [The snark!
I have a Calculus midterm in 45 minutes, so I really shouldn't be online. Especially since I just watched the new Glee promo--"Keep Holding On," which is Avril and so usually subject to scorn, except it's Glee and it was wonderful--and promptly burst into tears upon viewing.

WTF, brain. Now I need to go stop sniffling and study the proof for the Fibonacci sequence.
sit back and wait for the daylight

Hard drive cleaning time! Yay! I come bearing a few Susan/Caspian drabbles, which are actually drabbles and actually unconnected. I know. Please promptly die of shock.

Story: along this road he lost his soul
Title: Storybook
Summary: [One hundred drabbles for the casue100 prompt table.] Sometimes she wonders what exactly makes their story romantic.
Notes: NOT ANGST. NOT AT ALL. NOT ONE WHIT. WHOOT. Prompt: because.

~

Sometimes she wonders—what makes their story romantic?

Is it the flash of steel, the blunt tip of her arrows, how his throwing knives make a clang like bells when they strike armor?

Or is it the heady fire of their dance, when she stops her feet and tosses her hair and her heels press so firmly to the ground that she can feel decades of stone and centuries of earth sending pin pricks of pain and desire up through the callouses on her toes until the sweat sticks wisps of hair to her forehead and he chases the fire with his lips?

Or is it the men that have come before and failed, the knights with jasmine on their shields and promises of ships and gold and silks, their empty eyes and heady promises, their sworn fealty of heart and mind and soul that never broke through to her heart?

Or is it the legend, the whispered stories of the queen of old and the king of new, the bolstered tales that mothers and nurses tell to their little children in the dark?

Or is it the moment when he takes her hand and presses a kiss to her knuckles and says I love you, my queen?

Or is it when the smile curves her lips and she says I know and she means this is how it was always supposed to be.

~

Title: Watch Your Garden Grow
Summary: [One hundred drabbles for the casue100 prompt table.] When they are married, Susan makes Caspian a crown of daisies.
Notes: Prompt: flower.

~

When they are married, Susan makes him a crown of daisies. He doesn’t see her split the stems with the nail on her thumb, or watch her thread the blossoms together into a faintly lopsided circlet, but when she makes to place it on his head, he stops her with a firm grip on her wrists, and waits for the tears. They don’t come until after they are done, and they have danced and drunk wine and are settled back in the faintly musty chambers he now occupies. I miss her so much, Susan whispers, and Caspian feels foolish when he kisses her tear-tracks. I know, is all he can say, and the words don’t mean anything at all.

~

Title: Here It Comes (at last)
Summary: [One hundred drabbles for the casue100 prompt table.] She is sixty when they find the tumor.
Notes: Prompt: gone.

~

She is sixty when they find the tumor (malignant) in her left breast.

“Oh,” she wheezes on an exhale, looking her doctor (young-ish, male) in the eye.

“Well, how long do I have?”

“Not long,” he says, and he attempts to sound sympathetic, but everything about him (the shock of dark hair, the white of his coat and the room and the fluttery paper gown she has tied around her shoulders) counters emotion. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Hull.”

“Ms. Pevensie,” she corrects him absently. “I haven’t been married for fifteen years.” Her lips purse for a second, then relax. “I suppose that this was going to happen eventually.”

He has her sign a few lines on her chart, and taps a blue pen against his knee as he finishes scanning the paperwork. “Are you—is there anyone I can call for you?”

She can’t fight the smile at the rather earnest look on his face. She hasn’t seen such genuine concern in many years. “No,” she says. “I have to go to them.”
